Public disclosure of healthcare safety and quality measurements, as well as payment structures that encourage prevention of hospital-acquired conditions are essential tools to stop them from happening. Consumers Union believes these initiatives have the potential for saving tens of thousands of lives and billions of dollars in the Medicare system. Also, as we saw with the adoption of the initial CMS no-payment regulations, other payers are beginning to follow suit, extending these policies beyond the Medicare population.
