PD Editorial: Taming run-away insurance costs

April 11, 2011 – Blue Shield of California announced a 59 percent premium increase for individual policyholders, effective May 1. Combined with two other rate hikes in the past six months, some Blue Shield customers stood to pay almost double for their health insurance. If the formerly nonprofit insurer hadn’t backed down in the face of bad publicity, it’s safe to assume that some of its customers would have joined the ranks of the uninsured.
