Start the New Year Off Right with Money Saving Energy Efficiency Tips

Nothing says “Start off the New Year Right” like having extra cash in your pocket and doing good in the world. And what activity scores this double win? Energy efficiency! Here’s how to make 2018 your cleanest and greenest year yet.

For a typical American household, 51% of carbon emissions come from driving and 44% for home heating, cooling and appliances, so saving energy on driving and in your home is the most efficient (pun intended!) way to save.

Here are a few simple tips to get you going:

Free!
Around the home:

On the move:

  • Combine driving trips when possible.
  • Walk or bike to local destinations.
  • Keep your tires inflated to improve fuel economy (and a triple win for safety!)
  • Avoid idling–modern vehicles don’t need to “warm up” and climate control works better when the vehicle is moving.
  • Avoid aggressive driving and speeding (and a triple win for safety!)
  • Eliminate unnecessary weight in your vehicle.

Pay for Themselves!
Around the home:

  • Reduce drafts by adding insulation in the attic and sealing doors and windows. Get an energy audit to identify specific leaks and cost-effective fixes.
  • Replace incandescent and old CFL light bulbs with LEDs, which are long-lasting and efficient.
  • Use power strips to make turning off electronics easier.
  • Buy a timer or light sensor for outdoor or holiday lights so they only turn on at night.
  • Look for “Water Sense” showerheads and faucets, which perform as well as and use 20% less water than average products. They save energy by requiring less hot water.

On the move:

  • Change your vehicle’s oil regularly and maintain the vehicle according to its manual.

Shop around and save next time you make a major purchase
Around the home:

  • Look for the Energy Star label, which identifies top efficiency performers when shopping for major appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, boilers, heaters and air conditioning units.
  • Compare energy costs using the Energy Guide label and select the most efficient product that meets your needs.
