March 30, 2011 – Kelley VanTine was diagnosed with breast cancer in June. Since then, her total medical bills for a bilateral mastectomy, reconstructive surgery and chemotherapy, have been about $110,000. Once VanTine met her $2,700 deductible, her insurance picked up the rest so VanTine didn’t expect to pay any more out of pocket. That’s why she was shocked to receive a $4,900 bill from Benefis Health System earlier this month for approximately the first half of her radiation treatment.
