Consumers Union on the Comprehensive Transportation and Consumer Protection Act of 2015

Consumers Union wrote members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation expressing concerns that S. 1732 would undermine rental car safety and fail to provide NHTSA with the essential tools and resources it needs to protect the public. At markup, under pressure from safety advocates, the committee replaced the troubling rental car provision with language supported by Consumers Union to ban companies from renting consumers defective cars before they are repaired. The committee also conditionally increased the funding NHTSA receives and the amount it can penalize companies that break the law.
