Consumer Reports submitted a letter to the House Energy and Commerce Committee ahead of its hearing on the discussion draft of the American Privacy Rights Act (APRA). Consumer Reports has long argued in favor of federal privacy protections, and we support the bipartisan negotiations to develop a consensus solution to these pressing issues. However, as currently written, we believe the bill’s privacy protections are not robust enough to justify the bill’s preemption provisions that would undo important and evolving state and federal privacy laws.
