Consumer Reports letter to CPSC urging investigation into range oven glass doors

Dear Acting Chair Feldman,

We write to bring to the CPSC’s attention a potential product defect in certain Frigidaire, GE Appliances, Whirlpool, LG, and Samsung electric and gas range models. According to SaferProducts.gov, consumers reported at least 386 incidents involving these brands, between January 2025 and March 2026, in which the oven glass shattered unexpectedly.

Report summaries include phrases like, “oven glass shattered unexpectedly,” “spontaneously exploded while the oven was not in use,” and “oven door spontaneously shattered with a deafening noise” to describe the occurrence. Numerous reports claim that the appliance was turned off when the glass shattered, and many claim that it had not been used for periods of time ranging from several hours to multiple days.
