Consumers Union Urges Action on Unsafe Children’s Products
Washington, DC—With the announcement of Mattel’s third toy recall this summer, Consumers Union, nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, urged Congress to strengthen the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s ability to crack down on unsafe children’s toys and products.
“Consumers need to be able to trust the safety of products they buy. They rely on the government agencies to enforce their product safety laws,” said Don Mays, Senior Director of Product Safety Planning and Technical Administration for Consumers Union.
In a letter to members of Congress, Consumers Union catalogued recent press reports that show a federal agency ill-prepared to help protect children from unsafe toys and an industry that has done a weak job policing itself.
