Consumers Union Endorses Health Reform Legislation

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, today endorsed health reform legislation pending in Congress.
The nonpartisan organization has advocated for reforming America’s healthcare system for more than 70 years. Consumers Union president and CEO Jim Guest today sent the following letter to members of Congress:
Dear Member of Congress:
Consumers Union, the independent, non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports, strongly urges you to vote for the Health Reform legislation.
We believe the total package is a significant gain for consumers because it:
— establishes unprecedented new insurance protections and reforms;
–begins to ‘bend the cost curve downward’ on health costs that are devastating consumers;
–will save tens of thousands of lives per year by reducing healthcare-acquired infections and improving access, quality, and safety;
–extends Medicare solvency while making major drug and preventive care improvements.
Once passed, we plan to help consumers understand how reforms will affect them and how they can take advantage of the new benefits and rights they will receive. We look forward to working with you in this education process.
Sincerely,
Jim Guest
President and CEO
Consumers Union
