Consumers Union Applauds FDA Action on Dietary Supplements

WASHINGTON — Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine, applauds the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s action today to clamp down on tainted dietary supplements. By pressing the manufacturers of supplements to more closely monitor production and distribution of their products, the agency has taken an important step to protect the millions of Americans who use these supplements every day.
“Tainted dietary supplements can send you to the hospital or kill you,” said Ellen Bloom, the senior director of federal policy and the Washington office of Consumers Union. “This is the right step to weed out dangerous products and reduce the prevalence of adulterated supplements currently on the market. The FDA should be commended for prioritizing this issue and alerting consumers about dangerous supplements. Unfortunately, the challenge is that more dangerous products keep popping up.”
Consumers Union is urging the FDA to go further and vigorously oversee the dietary supplements marketplace through random spot checks and testing of products in the high-risk categories.
