Consumers Union Applauds Reps. Waxman and Markey on Effort to Make Drugs Safer
Nation’s Troubled Drug Safety Program Needs Overhaul

(Washington, DC.) – Consumers Union commends Congressmen Waxman and Markey for their introduction of the “Enhancing Drug Safety and Innovation Act of 2007.” The legislation gives the FDA stronger legal authority to help ensure the safety of drugs and medical devices in the marketplace.
“If we are serious about protecting consumers from unsafe drugs, we need to give the FDA the authority to hold drug companies accountable for the products they push,” said Bill Vaughan, senior policy analyst with Consumers Union. “Congressman Waxman’s legislation—if enacted, will save countless lives.”
The Waxman bill expands on legislation being considered in the Senate (S. 484, the Kennedy-Enzi bill) and adds important new consumer protections, described in Consumer Union’s letter to Congressman Waxman.
