CU Comments to USDA on National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard

SUMMARY: Consumers Union, the advocacy division of Consumer Reports, comments to the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service on Proposed Rule on National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, which requires disclosure if a food product contains bioengineered (genetically engineered) materials. The vast majority of consumers support on-package labeling of genetically engineered food. It is thus important that the disclosures USDA requires should be as accessible as possible to consumers, consistent with other labels they see in the marketplace such as “organic” and “non-GMO,” and otherwise not misleading.
