The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau: Protecting Consumers & Helping Them Make Smarter Choices

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) was established by Congress as part of the Dodd Frank Wall Street reform package passed in response to the devastating 2008 financial crisis. It works to uncover and stop unfair, deceptive, and abusive financial practices and to keep the rules governing credit cards, loans, bank accounts, and other financial services up-to-date to ensure consumers are treated fairly. Since it was launched in 2011, the CFPB has won almost $12 billion in refunds and relief for an estimated 29 million Americans who have been harmed by financial companies.
