Welcome to Consumer Reports Advocacy

Consumer Reports is an independent nonprofit organization that works for a fair, safe and transparent marketplace.

Since we were founded as Consumers Union in 1936, we have advocated for the rights of all consumers. Now, we are united under the Consumer Reports name, bringing together our trusted testing, research, journalism, and advocacy.

We hope you will partner with us and our six million members for a better world.

Mobile device “right to unlock” comments

Comments filed with the Copyright Office to support renewal of a pro-consumer exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, so that consumers have the right to “unlock” the computer software inside their mobile phone or tablet that binds it to only one wireless network.  Unlocking prolongs the useful life of a phone or tablet by allowing a consumer to use it with the wireless network of the consumer’s choosing.  This gives consumers more choices and more affordable options.
