Joint consumer letter to FCC opposing new Broadnet request for TCPA exemption

DESCRIPTION: Joint letter from NCLC, Consumer Reports, Consumer Federation of America, EPIC, and Public Knowledge, urging the FCC to deny a request by the automated calling platform Broadnet Teleservices. The requested change would create a new loophole in the Telephone Consumer Protection Act. Broadnet wants a declaratory ruling that the TCPA’s core protection—the requirement that robocalls be made only with the consumer’s prior consent—does not apply to robocalling by state and local governments. Such a ruling could unleash a new avalanche of unstoppable robocalling.
