CU letter to the USDA regarding the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the poultry consumers purchase every day

Consumer Reports, in “The High Cost of Cheap Chicken” in its February 2014 issue, found that 97 percent of chicken breasts tested harbored bacteria that could make you sick, and about half of all samples harbored multi-drug antibiotic resistant bacteria.  Consumers Union recommends that USDA drop a proposal to increase line speeds and reduce inspections at chicken processing plants, and urges USDA to classify salmonella that is multi-drug resistant and has made people sick as an adulterant.
