CR Testifies at Maryland House Economic Matters Committee Hearing on the HB 888, Security Features for Connected Devices

Consumer Reports testifies on February 26th, 2020 before the House Economic Matters Committee in the Maryland State Legislature on the issue of HB 888/SB 443: Security Features for Connected Devices.

Consumer Reports voices support for this bill, but advises that it must be modified in order to better protect consumers.

Consumer Reports advises making the following changes to improve the bill: remove the language that could give the impression that unique passwords constitute reasonable security; expand the definition of connected devices to cover all of the protocols currently in use; and augment the reasonable security requirement so that manufacturers are required to keep security features up-to-date for the reasonable lifetime of the device.
