Consumer Reports testifies on February 19th, 2020 before the Senate Finance Committee in the Maryland State Legislature on the issue of SB 957/HB 784: The Maryland Online Consumer Protection Act.
Consumer Reports voices support for this bill, but advises that it must be modified in order to better protect consumers.
Consumer Reports advises making the following changes to improve the bill: remove the requirement for identity to be verified in order to opt-out of sale of personal information; create a universal method for consumers to opt out; narrow the business exception; and ensure that there will be strong enforcement of the law once it is in force.
