DESCRIPTION: On April 14, the Judiciary Committee voted to formally approve the report prepared by the Majority staff of the Antitrust Subcommittee, on the Subcommittee’s almost year-and-a-half bipartisan investigation into the state of competition in the online marketplace. Adoption of the staff report enables it to be printed as an official Committee product. The staff report documents a marketplace in the grips of a handful of dominant online platforms — Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Apple, and Facebook — that are exercising undue gatekeeper control over who can access their platforms, and on what terms. Consumer Reports has been supporting and assisting with this important investigation since its inception, and we sent a letter to the Committee supporting adoption of the staff report. The staff report provides a solid foundation for continued bipartisan consideration of appropriate solutions.
