Consumer Reports writes in support of Washington D.C.’s Stop Discrimination by Algorithms Act. This bill would provide important protections against algorithmic harm for DC residents in areas like employment, housing, education, and more. The bill would prohibit algorithmic discrimination in these areas and also require companies to provide adverse action notices and explanations to individuals denied a life opportunity, which provides much-needed transparency into algorithmic decision-making. Further, the bill would require companies to audit themselves and provide a report with the results to the Attorney General.
