Consumer Reports supports H.B. 60, a bill pending in the New Mexico state legislature that would establish basic safeguards for the use of predictive artificial intelligence in high-stakes decisions about consumers’ lives—such as access to housing, employment, lending, insurance, and more.
H.B. 60 would be an essential patch for New Mexico’s existing civil rights and consumer protection laws in the A.I. era. H.B. 60 would go a long way to addressing that problem, in part by providing consumers with the information they need to understand if they’ve been subject to a biased or faulty AI system.
