Consumer Reports testified before the Maryland Senate Finance Committee advocating for amendments to H.B. 956, a bill that would create a working group in Maryland to study the regulation of artificial intelligence “used in decisions that significantly impact the livelihood and life opportunities” of Marylanders.
While the working group created by the bill would be directed to make recommendations related to labor, employment, privacy, and the protection of consumer rights, the group could be filled entirely by industry representatives. It has zero slots for consumer protection experts, privacy experts, civil rights experts, or representatives of labor.
Consumer Reports made the case for rebalancing the working group, so that everyday Marylanders’ interests are represented.
