Consumer Reports supports Maine L.D. 1705, biometric privacy legislation. This bill will protect biometric information by default, ensure that consumers cannot be charged for protecting their data, and provides appropriate incentives for companies to comply.
In particular, we appreciate that the bill includes the following key protections:
- Restrictions on collection of biometric identifiers without consent and a ban on sales of this information.
- Non-discrimination provisions that prevent controllers from charging consumers extra for using their privacy rights or provisioning a service upon the collection of biometric identifiers.
- Strong enforcement that includes a private right of action.
