Consumer Reports strongly opposes CA SB 1076, legislation backed by data brokers that would amend the California Delete Act to make it more difficult for individuals to delete their personal information from data brokers’ services.
Last year, Consumer Reports supported legislation called the Delete Act (SB 362), which was subsequently passed into law. The Delete Act, beginning in 2026, will require the California Privacy Protection Agency to create an “accessible deletion mechanism” that will allow consumers to universally delete their information from all of the state’s registered data brokers with a single action. Through SB 1076, data brokers now seek to undermine that law in several ways. We urge the legislature to reject this proposal.
