Consumer Reports letter to the Federal Insurance Office in support of updating its 2017 study that found that auto insurance is unaffordable for many drivers living in low and moderate income neighborhoods and underserved communities. The study was supposed to be issued annually but the FIO has not updated its research since it was first published. Consumer Reports’ letter highlights its own research finding that insurers’ use of socioeconomic ratings factors and algorithms makes auto insurance sharply more expensive for many American drivers, even though they have excellent driving record with no accidents or traffic violations. CR points out that this industry practice disproportionately harms low income drivers and communities of color.
