Consumer Reports, along with a coalition of privacy and consumer protection groups, submitted a memo of support of New York S. 9088/A. 9462, legislation that seeks to enable consumers to request the deletion of their personal information from all of the state’s registered data brokers’ records in a single action.
S. 9088/A. 9642 would also require data brokers to report what information they collect on consumers and would impose civil penalties and fines on data brokers who fail to comply with the registration or deletion requirements.
S. 9088/A. 9642 will provide a straightforward, powerful, and critically important tool for protecting the privacy and security of New Yorkers’ personal information, including by reducing:
- Scamming, stalking, and spying;
- Predatory use of consumer data; and
- The size and risk of data breaches.
