Consumer Reports and the Electronic Privacy Information Center support SB 923, a bill that would expand Californians’ right to delete to all data a company has about a consumer — not just data they collected from consumers directly. Today, California is an outlier from other states with comprehensive privacy laws, as most states apply deletion rights to all data held by a company. Many companies supplement the data they receive from consumers with information purchased from data brokers, which can include detailed and intrusive information about all aspects of their lives, including information about their health, voting records, and precise geolocation. SB 923 would close California’s loophole and let Californians delete all of a company’s records about them — including those purchased from external sources.
