Consumer Reports and Privacy Rights Clearinghouse support CA S.B. 361, legislation to amend the Delete Act. The legislation would require registered data brokers to make additional disclosures about their business practices, such as whether they collect account log-in credentials, government identification numbers, citizenship and immigration status, sexual orientation, union membership, and biometric data.
This will help Californians understand who has this information so they can make informed decisions about whether to request deletion of their information from all registered data brokers using the mechanism created by last session’s Delete Act.
Consumer Reports helped support the passage of the Delete Act. The law requires the state to create a one-stop-shop that will allow consumers to delete all of their personal information from registered data brokers in a single action.
