Consumer and civil rights groups urged the Federal Trade Commission to make it easier for Spanish speakers to assert their new identity theft rights under the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2004 (FACTAct). The new law allows consumers to request a free annual credit report, a fraud alert, and trade line blocking, three useful tools to safeguard against identity theft. The groups have called on the FTC to require credit bureaus to provide assistance to consumers in Spanish and other commonly spoken non-English languages so they can more readily assert these new rights.
