Consumers Union, the policy and advocacy arm of Consumer Reports, today responded, in a letter to key members of Congress, to a July 3, 2012 livestock industry critique of the organization’s Meat Without Drugs campaign. The campaign has called on Trader Joe’s and eleven other large supermarket chains to carry only meat and poultry raised without antibiotics.
In a letter to two House Committees, Consumers Union refuted industry challenges to its supermarket campaign. Staff at the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future reviewed Consumers Union’s letter.
Consumers Union reiterated its call for Congress to pass the Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA) and for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to restrict antibiotic use in food animals to only those animals identified by a veterinarian as sick.
