Consumers Union Statement on House Vote to Repeal FCC Net Neutrality Rules

WASHINGTON, D.C — Consumers Union, the nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, today expressed disappointment following a House vote in favor of a resolution (H.J. Res. 37) to strike down the Federal Communications Commission’s rules for net neutrality.  The White House announced this week that the Administration “strongly opposes” the House resolution, and that if such a resolution arrives on the President’s desk, senior advisors would recommend that he veto it.

Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for Consumers Union, said, “When you surf the web, you ought to be able to access the sites and services you choose, without your Internet provider limiting your choices to its preferred sites. The FCC rules are critical in order to preserve consumer choice on the Internet.”

She said, “We urge the Senate to support these rules for the sake of keeping the Internet open and encouraging the kind of innovation and exchange of ideas that people have come to expect from the Internet.”
