Consumers Union opposes House FCC bills

News Release

Consumers Union – Policy and Advocacy Division of Consumer Reports

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

WASHINGTON — As a House subcommittee prepares to mark up two bills to restructure the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Consumers Union, the policy and advocacy division of Consumer Reports, is urging members to oppose the legislation.

The House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology is scheduled to hold a markup of the legislation (HR 3309 and 3310) today.

Parul P. Desai, policy counsel for Consumers Union, said, “One of the most important jobs of the FCC is to help protect consumers.  This legislation would make the process of considering the public interest for transactions more complicated and confusing, and would ultimately make it harder for the FCC to protect consumers.  These bills are being touted as reform measures, but we think they would do more harm than good.”
