Austin,TX — The chair of the Innovation and Technology Caucus of the Texas Legislature, Representative Giovanni Capriglione, revealed the Texas Responsible AI Governance Act, which will be introduced in the upcoming 89th legislative session.
Grace Gedye, a policy analyst with Consumer Reports, said, “We appreciate Rep. Capriglione’s work to develop a draft AI bill that takes on the critical issue of algorithmic discrimination, and prohibits some uses of AI that present unacceptable risks. We look forward to working with Rep. Capriglione to strengthen the bill to ensure Texan consumers get the information they need and their rights can be robustly defended when AI systems help make high-stakes decisions about their lives, like whether they qualify for a loan, whether they land their dream apartment, or what insurance will cost them. It’s important that Texans stay in the driver’s seat – not AI.”
CR recently published an AI policy guide that outlines our key positions and recommendations for policymakers and a survey that found a majority of Americans are uncomfortable with AI in employment, housing, and healthcare decisions.
